That's not to say there isn't good work in the exhibit. Gaal Shepherd's "Memorial Totem II" is a willowy piece of wood wedged into a disk of bark at its base. It slithers into the air and pokes out in knobs that have the awkward vulnerability of a teenager's Adam's apple. Finally, it shoots up into the air in the shape of a single lick of flame. Pat McNabb's "Yard Sale Dress" is a mishmash of colorfully painted clothespins and knickknacks, clattering together in the shape of a dress; dolls and political buttons and seashells add up to the life of the home they came from. David Newton's "Man" is a tiny fellow perching atop a jagged, 14-foot length of wood, a touching comment on how simple and contained we are, despite our arduous journeys.
